What is a bi-metal screw?

A bi-metal screw has a body and head made from stainless steel with a hardened carbon steel drill point welded to the tip. Stainless steel alone is too soft to drill structural steel, so the carbon point does the drilling and forms the thread — then sits buried inside the fixed material, leaving only stainless steel exposed to the elements.

Can bi-metal screws drill into heavy structural steel?

Yes. Standard bi-metal TEK® 3 points drill light section steel from 1.2–3.5mm and TEK® 5 points handle heavy section from 4.0–12.5mm, while SuperTEK® bi-metal points extend drilling capacity to structural steel up to 18mm thick — no pre-drilling required at any thickness.

Where Bi-Metal Screws Are Used

Coastal, Marine & Extreme Environments

Within a few miles of the coast, salt-laden air destroys standard coated fasteners years before the cladding itself fails. A4 (316) grade bi-metal hex head and washered screws fix roof and wall sheeting to light or heavy section steel with a service life to match the building envelope — including stitching screws for side-laps and flashings. For the harshest conditions — splash zones, de-icing chemical exposure and aggressive industrial atmospheres — selected hex head patterns are available in A8 super-duplex stainless steel, offering corrosion resistance beyond even 316 grade.

Composite & Insulated Panels

Stainless composite panel fasteners secure sandwich panels from 80mm up to 300mm to light section, heavy section and structural steel supports, with 12mm, 16mm and 19mm sealing washer options. A2 for standard external work; A4 and SuperTEK® versions for coastal and heavy structural applications.

Timber to Steel

Bi-metal wing drill screws fix timber battens, boards and ply through to steel with a flush countersunk finish — the wings ream the timber, then shear off at the steel so the hardened point can drill through. Gash point versions handle deep timber embedment.

Framing, Flush Finish & Aluminium

Low profile dome and pancake head bi-metal screws give a flush finish behind boards for framing and rail connections, while dedicated stainless self-tapping screws fasten into aluminium and thin metals without the risk of galvanic corrosion.

Frequently asked questions

Bi-Metal

A2 (304 grade) is general-purpose stainless steel with excellent corrosion resistance for most external building applications. A4 (316 grade, often called marine grade) contains added molybdenum, giving significantly better resistance to chlorides — salt air, de-icing salts and pool chemicals. As a rule of thumb: specify A4 within 5 miles of the coast, near swimming pools, or in industrial environments with chemical exposure; A2 is the economical choice elsewhere.

Whenever the fastener needs to last as long as the cladding or structure it's fixing — typically coastal buildings, swimming pools, food processing and chemical plants, or any project specifying a stainless steel fixing. Coated carbon screws such as our Evoshield® range offer excellent value for standard environments, but a coating is sacrificial; stainless steel is corrosion-resistant through its full thickness.

Direct contact between dissimilar metals can cause galvanic corrosion, but in practice stainless fasteners are the standard choice for fixing aluminium — the fastener is the small component and stainless is the more noble metal, so the risk to the joint is minimal. Our A2 and A4 low-profile self-tapping screws are designed specifically for aluminium applications; EPDM washered versions further isolate the fixing point.
